Lithium-ion polymer ( LiPo ) packs are the successors to the well-known lithium-ion ( LiIon ) packs . The main advantage of LiPo batteries is undoubtedly the ratio of capacity to size. They are very small in size while maintaining a very high current efficiency, which allows you to choose the right package for virtually every AEG replica. They have no memory effect. They can be charged very often without being discharged first. Frequent charging is beneficial for this type of battery.
Remember not to discharge the LiPo pack below 3V per cell and not to overcharge above 4.2V per cell . Another advantage of LiPo packs is the low percentage of self-discharge. An unused package loses about 3-5% of energy per month. The package should be carefully watched, because during a very long storage it may be discharged below the permissible minimum value (3V per cell) and irreversible chemical reactions may occur, which may cause deterioration of the package’s properties, including its permanent damage, in extreme cases – ignition. An unused LiPo pack should be approximately 70% charged on average.
With proper operation, the life of LiPo packs is 500-700 cycles on average. An important aspect is the temperature at which LiPo packs can work. Unlike other batteries, LiPo cells perform well at low temperatures. However, they should be charged at room temperature. To maintain the good condition of LiPo batteries, they should be balanced during charging using the service plug that most LiPo packs have (a good LiPo charger has a built-in balancer).
